SUMMARY:Diane Shuur
DESCRIPTION:A leading vocalist in contemporary jazz\, Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. Nicknamed “Deedles” as a child (her mother’s endearment)\, Tacoma-born Schuur grew up steeped in traditional American jazz\, courtesy of her parents’ formidable record collection with ample LPs by Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington. \nDinah Washington is often listed as Schuur’s major vocal influence. She learned the iconic singer’s “What a Difference a Day Makes” while still a toddler and began developing her own rich\, resonant vocal style. Jazziz Magazine describes her approach as one that encompasses her whole lifetime of singing: “Schuur’s vocal chops move from little-girl innocence to bawdy-mama blues in a hair’s breadth\, but always at the service of the song.” Schuur is also an accomplished pianist\, accompanying herself onstage\, whether leading her own small group\, with big band or symphony orchestra. \nSchuur captures the essence of Dinah Washington on her newest album with a reflective version of Washington’s well-known “This Bitter Earth.” Co-produced by Schuur and Grammy winning saxophonist Ernie Watts\, the project entitled Running On Faith features Schuur’s piano performance throughout\, release date May 8\, 2020 on Jazzheads Music Group. On this project\, the vocalist creates new versions of songs for which she has a deep-rooted affection. Schuur arranges music by some of her favorite performers and songwriters; from Miles Davis to Carole King to Paul McCartney. According to the artist\, “I’ve been focusing on the condition of our world and chose songs that make a statement about what is and also some songs of hope\, about what can be. \nRunning On Faith includes blues\, straight-ahead jazz\, gospel and a few tunes that don’t fit a category. Opening with Percy Mayfield’s “Walking On A Tightrope” Schuur sings “the blues and I\, we know each other\,” commencing the arc of this musical journey. In addition to the reprise of the Dinah Washington classic\, she remembers her friend Ernestine Anderson who first introduced her to the unifying lyrics of the Miles Davis standard “All Blues\,” – we are all shades\, all hues\, all blues. Her often- referenced fondness of classic rock is at the root of the title track\, originally recorded by Eric Clapton along with the hard-swinging interpretation of the Paul Simon composition “Something So Right.” Introspection brought her to the McCartney/Lennon classic “Let It Be” and Jeff Lynn’s “The Sun Will Shine on you.” She closes with lone piano on the spiritual “Swing Low Sweet Chariot.” Schuur adds these familiar compositions to her extensive catalog\, fashioning a musical blueprint of her current place in time\, and exemplifying her ability to evolve over a 50-plus year career \nRunning on Faith is the follow up to her well-received I Remember You: With Love To Stan and Frank\, her debut on Jazzheads in 2014. I Remember You is an homage to two of her mentors\, Frank Sinatra and Stan Getz and also commemorates her “official” discovery by saxophone titan Getz at the 1979 Monterey Jazz Festival. A review of I Remember You by Victor L. Schermer in All About Jazz states “She consistently combines fine artistic efforts with the pizazz of an entertainer…her style incorporates both subtle jazz interpretation and the power of rhythm and blues.” \nSchuur’s much-laureled career includes two Grammy Awards—each for Best Jazz Vocal Performance—on Timeless (1986) and Diane Schuur and The Count Basie Orchestra (1987). Both were released by GRP Records\, the label that had launched her recording career. Schuur scored three additional Grammy nominations for subsequent albums Pure Schuur and Love Songs\, as well as for the individual track “The Christmas Song.” Schuur’s music has explored almost every locale on the American musical landscape\, and her attendant studio collaborations—showcasing her pitch-perfect execution and three-and-a-half-octave vocal range—are a who’s who of American originators in a plethora of styles. They include the albums Heart To Heart with B.B. King and Swingin’ for Schuur” with Maynard Ferguson\, alongside assorted tracks with Stan Getz\, Ray Charles\, Stevie Wonder\, Herbie Hancock\, Alison Krauss\, Vince Gill\, Mark Knopfler and Jose Feliciano\, among countless others. Distinguished producers who have joined forces with Schuur include Phil Ramone (Friends For Schuur)\, André Fisher (Pure Schuur\, In Tribute)\, Barry Manilow (Midnight)\, Steve Buckingham (The Gathering)\, Dave Grusin (Schuur Thing\, Deedles\, Timeless) Al Schmitt (Blues for Schuur\, Love Walked In) and Oscar Castro-Neves (Schuur Fire). \nSchuur’s voice is bold and expressive\, traversing a straight-ahead brand of jazz in her trademark style—simultaneously romantic and mischievous\, radiating soulful passion. And\, as noted above\, it all started very early in her life; the precocious jazz singer made her stage debut at ten years old\, performing at a local Holiday Inn. An audio souvenir of another formative gig is actually captured on her 2008 album\, Some Other Time\, which contains 11-year-old Deedles’ 1964 performance of “September In The Rain.” The vintage track displays the template for all the elements present in her mature style today: the alternating qualities of intimate tenderness and outgoing theatricality\, the assured sense of rhythm and phrasing\, and perfect-pitch sensibility. A touching piece on this recording is the classic Irish “Danny Boy\,” which opens with a snippet of her mother’s voice asking\, “Diane\, do you know the song Danny Boy?” and Schuur responding\, “I’m going to record it\, Mom. Just for you.” Her mother\, sadly\, never got to hear that 2008 release\,” as she died of cancer in 1967\, when Diane was 13. \nThe artist has been blind since her premature birth in 1953\, having lost her sight to the disorder Retinopathy of Prematurity. It affected newborns receiving high-oxygen therapy during neonatal intensive care—which was standard practice until\, tragically\, 1954. She first learned to play piano by ear\, picking out tunes on the keys with two fingers at the age of 3. “I sang to myself at night\,” recalls Schuur. “Mom and Dad would open the door a crack and yell ‘Diane\, shut up\,’ so I progressed from there to the closet.” By age 6\, Schuur was giving regular command performances amid her corduroy jumpers. \nHer formal study of piano began while at the Washington State School for the Blind which Schuur attended until she was 11 years old. A significant inspiration came at the age of 12 when her mother brought home an LP by the famed blind pianist George Shearing\, Concerto for My Love. Young Diane learned all the pieces (by ear\, of course)\, soaking up the distinctive style of Shearing. Her family arranged a meeting with Shearing during a local stint in Seattle\, and she learned from that encounter that a life in music was indeed within her grasp\, despite her handicap. Deedles finished her studies in public schools\, eventually studying voice at the University of Puget Sound. \nAfter playing clubs around the Pacific Northwest\, Schuur’s first break came in 1975 at the age of 21\, when she did an informal backstage audition for Doc Severinsen during one of The Tonight Show bandleader’s tour stops at the Seattle Opera House. Severinsen’s drummer Ed Shaughnessy was so moved by Diane’s talent\, he invited her to sing with him at the Monterey Jazz Festival the same year. That performance led to a return\, high-profile featured spot at Monterey in 1979\, where Stan Getz\, captivated by her set\, became her mentor and advocate. \n“She’s just like Sarah or Ella to me\,” Getz once said about Schuur. “She’s taking from the tradition\, and what comes out is her own conception and advancement of the tradition.” A subsequent invitation from Getz had her participating in an all-star performance at the White House with Dizzy Gillespie\, Chick Corea\, Jon Faddis\, Itzhak Perlman and Getz\, filmed for PBS. When GRP Records owner Larry Rosen happened to catch its broadcast\, Rosen signed her immediately to GRP\, and Schuur’s career took off. First Lady Nancy Reagan requested Schuur return for an encore performance in 1984\, and she was back in D.C. yet again in 1999\, as one of the select musical guests invited to sing for Stevie Wonder at the Kennedy Center Honors (when Wonder received that prestigious award). \nBetween 1984 and 1997\, Schuur made 11 albums for GRP\, plus two best-of collections. She went on to record four projects for Concord Records\, and experienced a dream come true when Ahmet Ertegun\, the legendary founder of Atlantic Records\, signed her\, resulting in the 1999 release Music Is My Life. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall seven times and has racked up numerous Billboard chart-topping jazz releases. Several classic filmed performances are also available\, including Ray Charles In Concert with Diane Schuur (Image Entertainment)\, Diane Schuur & The Count Basie Orchestra (Image Entertainment)\, and Live From Seattle with Maynard Ferguson (Paradise Artist Studios). \nOver the years\, Schuur has participated in many charitable and educational projects. She is a respected educator\, conducting clinics and master classes for students of all ages at universities\, high schools\, and middle schools. A partial list of organizations she has assisted via fundraisers includes Music Doing Good\, Inc.\, The Braille Institute\, Northwest African American Museum\, World Institute on Disabilities\, Betty Ford Foundation\, Library For the Blind\, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America\, and the Jerry Lewis Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. \nConnecting with audiences is what Schuur does better than anything else\, and after five illustrious decades she’s still doing it\, on record and in concert. “For the future I plan to continue my reading of American song\,” reflects Schuur\, “paying respect to celebrated writers and polishing their gems in the jazz tradition.” And she is\, indeed\, fulfilling that goal\, touring theaters and festivals around the world with her own group. \nAdditionally\, Schuur has a personal library of arrangements for performances with traditional big band and symphony orchestra. She has appeared with Boston Pops\, the the Houston Symphony\, the Honolulu Symphony\, the Detroit Symphony and the Moscow Symphony as well as the Toledo Jazz Orchestra\, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra and the Reno Jazz Orchestra to name just a few. Reviewing one performance with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops Orchestra\, All About Jazz declares\, “Ms. Schuur surely is among the very best jazz vocalists\, and she exemplifies if not redefines the ‘diva’ category with her warm\, often humorous\, and relaxed interactions with the audience and the musicians. Her mere presence is enough to make for a memorable evening.”

SUMMARY:An Evening with Brian Culbertson
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of crafting a 20-album catalogue and architecting more than 30 Billboard No. 1 singles as a multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter and producer\, Brian Culbertson has charted his own unique course in music. Label him jazz and he makes a funk record. Call him an R&B artist and he drops an acoustic jazz trio collection. Brand him pop and he creates a 32-minute New Age opus. And you’d be hard pressed to name another instrumentalist of his ilk who can mount an elaborately designed concert production that will keep him on the road for three consecutive months. \nCulbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album that he recorded in his college apartment featuring keyboard-led contemporary jazz tracks. “Long Night Out” landed him a lengthy record deal and signaled that a star was born. \nFlash forward to present day\, his aptly titled “XX” album – those X’s are Roman numerals – finds Culbertson making a record unlike any of his previous releases because of its diversity. “It’s a mix of things that I’ve done throughout my twenty records. There’s a lot of funky instrumentals\, some pop-sounding tracks\, a couple slow jams\, straight-ahead jazz\, gospel\, some vocals\, lots of horns and some straight-up FUNK!” said the Chicago-based Culbertson. “The album is very much a mixture of some modern sounding programming along with live instruments\, too. Real drums on almost everything mixed with programming. Definitely a cool sound.” \nRecreating that cool sound live for fans is the best part as Culbertson and his band embark on The XX Tour\, playing more than 70 concerts around the US (now postponed until Spring of 2021). In addition to performing much of the new album\, the setlist includes cuts from Culbertson’s hit-filled songbook along with a segment showcasing songs from “Winter Stories\,” an album released last fall that placed him in an acoustic jazz trio setting for the first time. An exuberant performer\, Culbertson spends months in preproduction meticulously working to create stunning visuals – staging\, lighting\, wardrobe and effects – in order to put on a mesmerizing\, show each time he takes the stage. \nPossessing style\, panache and a savvy business mind capable of moving the needle in music and beyond\, Culbertson founded and curates the annual Napa Valley and Chicago Jazz Getaways\, which have attracted guests from all over the globe to experience his premier events. \nWhether you’re listening to music from “XX” on record or live in concert\, you’re hearing an eclectic\, entertaining and engaging set from an artist at the peak of his power.

SUMMARY:Martin Barre Performs Classic Jethro Tull
DESCRIPTION:In 1969\, a band of four English musicians arrived in New York and literally took America by storm. Over the next 50 years\, this legendary band accumulated over 65 million record sales and a following of loyal fans that are the envy of rock bands worldwide! This band was Jethro Tull. At the center of Tull’s unique sound is guitarist Martin Barre\, renowned for his formidable mastery of historic riffs\, power chords and soaring melodic solos. \nMartin is celebrating the history of Jethro Tull with a ‘Tour of Tours.’ He will be bringing a spectacular show with his touring band\, featuring Dan Crisp on lead vocals\, Alan Thomson on keyboard\, and Darby Todd on drums\, with Becca Langsford and Alex Hart on vocals\, plus two very special guests – Dee Palmer and Clive Bunker – both of whom performed with Tull for many years and were an important part of their success. \nThe show will also feature a special multimedia presentation that\, together with the music\, highlights the 50 years of Jethro Tull’s musical career. \nThis is the most significant Tull show of the past two decades\, truly a very special concert that will do justice to the legend. \nClive Bunker was Jethro Tull’s original drummer and played on Stand Up\, Benefit & Aqualung. He was part of the original band that stormed the USA from 1969 on. \nDee Palmer has arranged string\, brass\, and woodwind parts for Jethro Tull songs in the late 1960s through to the present day. She formally joined the group in 1976\, playing keyboards on albums including Songs from The Wood\, Heavy Horses & Stormwatch. \nThe tour ‘Martin Barre Performs Classic Jethro Tull’ will be supported by Martin’s 50 years of Tull album\, released worldwide.

SUMMARY:PETER WHITE CHRISTMAS
with Mindi Abair and Vincent Ingala
DESCRIPTION:Make your list and check it twice! This holiday concert is more than just nice!! A Peter White Christmas with Mindi Abair and Vincent Ingala is coming to town. Contemporary jazz lovers eagerly await this annual fun filled concert\, which has packed fans into halls and arenas coast-to- coast year after year. \nPeter White is an extraordinary and fluent acoustic guitarist whose skills are world-renowned. Revered saxophonist Mindi Abair returns again with her dynamic vigor ready to captivate audiences far & wide. Vincent Ingala is no stranger to contemporary jazz audiences—his charisma\, energy\, and musicianship will put a smile on anyone’s face. \nPeter recalls\, “My earliest memories of Christmas were probably not much different from many other people: snowflakes\, tinsel\, Santa Claus\, reindeer\, and the opening of presents surrounded by family. As a child\, my father taught me to play Christmas music on my first instrument\, the recorder\, and my love for Christmas music has endured throughout the years. I hope this tour will be an opportunity for many Smooth Jazz fans to enjoy their favorite Christmas songs in a family setting. You know\, I might even bring my recorder!” Peter White’s classic acoustic guitar style can be enjoyed through an ever-growing and best-selling catalog\, including his latest release “Music for Starlux Airlines” (2019). \n“Growing up\, my family would get together for Christmas every year” Mindi reminisces. “My grandmother would cook oyster stuffing and rhubarb pie\, and we’d all play and sing together. I still make a rhubarb pie every year in her honor. My grandmother gave me great advice early on\, ‘If you play the piano you can be the life of any party!’ She was an opera singer and would sit and play piano and sing Christmas songs. My father would take over and play more rock/blues/jazz versions of Christmas songs and we’d all sing. And of course\, I’d pull out my sax and play along with my father on piano. What an amazing way to grow up\, with music surrounding me\, and weaving into my life so seamlessly from a young age.” Mindi’s newest release is her first “Best of” (2021) compilation on Pretty Good For A Girl Records which consists of 19 songs including her biggest hits\, previously unreleased gems\, a few of Mindi’s personal favorites\, and her brand new single “April”. \nVincent Ingala “I can vividly remember not being able to fall asleep waiting for Santa Claus to arrive on Christmas Eve. Somehow though\, he always managed to get the job done while I was sleeping\, and before I could catch him! I remember feeling extra special that Santa would place all of the gifts around the fireplace like a display\, as opposed to them being wrapped under the Christmas tree. I would sneak downstairs multiple times with my flashlight to get a sneak peek before the sun would rise on Christmas morning! Memories such as these I will always continue to hold in my heart\, and they are what makes Christmas a very magical time of the year.” Vincent’s latest release is “Echos of the Heart” (2020) on Shanachie Records.

SUMMARY:SHELÉA
DESCRIPTION:With widespread comparison to the vocal expertise of legendary Whitney Houston\, and the piano prowess of Alicia Keys\, it’s no surprise that artist and actress\, Sheléa (pronounced shuh-lay-yuh)\, has garnered co-signs from the likes of Stevie Wonder\, Mary J.Blige\, Missy Elliott\, David Foster\, Queen Latifah\, Jamie Foxx\, Jennifer Hudson\, Quincy Jones\, and more. \n \nBlending traditional pop\, jazz\, R&B and soul\, Sheléa brings a contemporary edge to classics\, and a classic touch to contemporary pop standards. With years of making a name for herself as a vocal powerhouse\, having performed twice at the White House; Library of Congress; Carnegie Hall; the Kennedy Center; and more\, 2020 marked her acting debut as Dorinda Clark in The Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel. The Lifetime biopic drew 2.7 million viewers and “was the strongest original movie for all television for 2020 across key demos including both broadcast and cable.” Based on the iconic Clark Sisters\, the film recounts the story of the highest-selling female gospel group in history\, and of their trailblazing mother\, Mattie Moss Clark (Aunjanue Ellis). With the film as the top social trend across all television\, Sheléa’s name was prominently found leading the charge. \nHaving been discovered to have an aptitude for vocal harmony at age 2\, Sheléa was already writing songs on her first wooden piano for her sisters by age 4. She began piano lessons at age 7\, and her musical talent was regularly on display at Bakersfield Southside Church before age 12. However\, it wasn’t until Sheléa arrived at Oakwood University in Huntsville\, Alabama when she thought about making music for a living\, after gaining her first recording studio experience singing with a short-lived girl group. Though her major changed\, classical music steadfastly remained her minor\, and she ultimately graduated with a B.A. in music\, with an emphasis in piano. \nWith only local performances and recorded vocals on the theme song for Will & Jada Pinkett Smith’s\, All of Us\, under her belt\, Sheléa’s first big break came via a connection with vocal sextet\, Take 6\, members of the tight-knit 7th Day Adventist Church Community. In 2008\, she was featured on the group’s Grammy-nominated album\, The Standard\, singing the classic\, “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Stevie Wonder heard the recording and loved her voice so much that he invited her to visit him at his Wonderlove Studio. This meeting led to her having the opportunity to sing at his annual Christmas concert\, “A House Full of Toys\,” and later join him as a background vocalist on his “Songs In the Key of Life Revisited Tour.” \nFollowing the tour\, she went on to compose and perform the theme song\, “Love Fell On Me”\, for SONY’s Jumping the Broom (2011)\, starring Angela Bassett\, and meanwhile\, her own composition/recording “Can’t Play it Cool With You” (a jazzy ballad featuring trumpeter\, Chuck Findley) was tapped for an episode of the CW superhero show\, Black Lightning. Around the same time\, Sheléa was also working as a songwriter/vocalist with legendary producers\, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis\, followed by her writing and producing three songs for Chanté Moore’s Love the Woman\, including the single\, “It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way.” Subsequently\, she also co-wrote “I Fell In” (with Phil Galdston—composer of “Save the Best for Last”) for Vanessa Williams’ album\, The Real Thing. In addition to writing for other artists\, and recording vocals on major motion picture soundtracks such as Hotel Rwanda\, Akeelah and the Bee \, and Be Cool. Sheléa released her 2013 debut album\, Love Fell On Me\, featuring heavyweights Stevie Wonder\, Brian McKnight\, and Narada Michael Walden. Her single\, “I’ll Never Let You Go”\, hit #22 on the Billboard R&B charts and charted for 22+ weeks at its peak. \nIn 2016 Sheléa was invited by Rickey Minor to perform a set at Quincy Jones’ house for Gina Clayton-Johnson’s Essie Justice Group fundraiser. Following an unforgettable performance\, she connected with Quincy and his team at Quincy Jones Productions\, and was signed to his management roster shortly thereafter. She was then handpicked to be the inaugural artist to perform at Quincy’s first-ever music venue\, Q’s Bar and Lounge\, located in the Palazzo Versace Hotel\, Dubai. \nOn top of creating original music\, Sheléa has cemented her reputation as the go-to voice for legendary tribute concerts. With a resume and list of performance credits that are as staggering as they are multi-faceted\, she has traveled internationally as a featured vocalist in “An Intimate Evening with David Foster” singing selections made famous by Natalie Cole (“Unforgettable”)\, Chaka Khan (“Through the Fire”)\, Whitney Houston (songs from “The Bodyguard” motion picture soundtrack)\, and Toni Braxton (“Unbreak My Heart”)\, as well as the power duet “Tell Him” on which she sang Barbra Streisand (giving her the nickname: “The Black Barbra”) with Pia Toscano singing Celine Dion. \nSheléa was initially invited to perform at the White House at the suggestion of Stevie Wonder to honor master songwriting team\, Burt Bacharach & Hal David\, with the Gershwin Prize singing the Dionne Warwick classic “Anyone Who Had a Heart” (a showstopper she reprised at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards and at David’s memorial service). She was asked to return for a second performance at the White House\, before President Barack & First Lady Michele Obama (who led the room in a standing ovation) for “Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles\,” singing “Night Time is the Right Time” with Anthony Hamilton. \nSheléa was also featured on the PBS-TV specia l Zoltan Maga: Live from Budapest with David Foster as a special guest of the Hungarian violinist\, and in the fall of 2016\, Sheléa appeared in HBO’s multi-Emmy-nominated film\, All the Way\, singing and acting as a funeral choir soloist\, loosely based on the great Mahalia Jackson. \nFor five consecutive years\, she has toured with saxophonist\, Kirk Whalum\, on his The Gospel According to Jazz Christmas shows\, and is featured on his Grammy/NAACP Image Award-nominated\, The Gospel According to Jazz: Chapter IV. Furthermore\, Sheléa sang the spiritual “Wade in the Water” at the Kennedy Center Honors\, accompanying the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in tribute to choreographer Carmen de Lavallade\, and at the Governor’s Ball\, she sang the Diane Warren-penned World Humanitarian Day anthem\, “I Was Here” (originally recorded by Beyoncé). \nSheléa made her Carnegie Hall debut performing “Shattered” in tribute to songwriting great\, Jimmy Webb. Her tribute to Great American Songbook legends\, Alan and Marilyn Bergman\, became the impetus for her long-awaited third album\, Pretty World: A Tribute to Alan and Marilyn Bergman. And with an invitation from The Recording Academy\, she honored Tina Turner through a medley of “What’s Love Got to Do With It” / “Proud Mary” / “The Best” on the PBS special\, A Grammy Salute to Music Legends. After performing on a variety of specials\, 2019 brought forth Shelea’s very own PBS special\, Quincy Jones Presents: Sheléa\, in which she performed a variety of originals\, mixed with everything from Aretha to Whitney Houston. \nAnd most recently\, Sheléa has been at the forefront of the Quincy Jones Tribute concerts at venues such as The O2 Arena in London; the AccorHotels Arena in Paris; and the legendary Stravinski Hall at Montreux Jazz Festival; singing Michael Jackson hits in honor of Quincy’s work on Off the Wall\, Thriller\, & Bad. \nAs a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences\, Sheléa was an invited guest speaker at the “Grammy Museum Summer Sessions\,” helping to educate high school students on the value of music\, songwriting craft\, vocal technique\, and all-around professionalism. In addition to working with students and writing songs for kids\, Sheléa is also an avid proponent for female empowerment. Most notably\, she teamed up with Grammy Award-winning producer/songwriter\, Tena Clark\, to sing the anthem “Break the Chain” for the global launch of “One Billion Rising\,” headed by Eve Ensler and Taína Asili. Sheléa also closed the 2016 TEDWomen conference in San Francisco\, with a performance of “I Believe” and performed for the National Women’s History Museum honoring Jennifer Siebel Newsom and Dolores Huerta. \nIn line with her passion for spreading empowering messages\, she posted a personal affirmation in song form on Instagram\, and later released it as a single\, after receiving an overwhelming amount of covers and demands from people all over the world asking for her to release it as a single. “You Are Enough” is available HERE.
