SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky
DESCRIPTION:Featuring:\nThe South Shore Symphony\nDavid LaMarche\, Guest Conductor \nTchaikovsky had great respect for the conventions of writing for ballet\, but his ballet scores\, of which Swan Lake was the first\, are also masterpieces of orchestral writing. Of course\, the ballet was meant to accompany the power of the music which is often subsumed in the beauty of the dance. This concert will provide an opportunity to enjoy this music for its own sake. \nWith his revolutionary score\, The Rite of Spring\, Igor Stravinsky created an unforgettable musical panorama of primitive Russia and its intimate and sometimes savage relationship with nature. Maestro David LaMarche\, the highly acclaimed conductor of the world renowned American Ballet Theatre\, brings the experience of countless performances with the most famous ballet dancers of our time to create his own unique interpretation of these great works.

SUMMARY:Kirk Whalum presents The 6th Annual A Gospel According to Jazz Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Featuring:\nKirk Whalum with Jonathan Butler\,\nand Special Guests John Stoddart\, Sheléa and Kevin Whalum\nKirk Whalum is an American smooth jazz saxophonist and songwriter. He toured with Whitney Houston for more than seven years and soloed in her single “I Will Always Love You\,” the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. He was also featured on many Luther Vandross albums\, most often playing on the singer’s covers of older pop and R&B standards like “Anyone Who Had a Heart\,” “I (Who Have Nothing)\,” and “Love Won’t Let Me Wait.” \nWhalum has recorded a series of well received solo albums and film soundtracks\, with music ranging from pop to R&B to smooth jazz. Kirk’s musical accomplishments have brought him a total of 12 Grammy nominations. He won his first Grammy award in 2011 for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do\,” featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside lifelong friend and writer Jerry Peters. \nJonathan Butler  His music is often classified as R&B\, jazz fusion\, or worship music. Born and raised in Athlone\, Cape Town\, South Africa during Apartheid\, Butler started singing and playing acoustic guitar as a child. Racial segregation and poverty during Apartheid has been the subject of many of his records. His first single was the first by a black artist played by white radio stations in the racially segregated South Africa and earned a Sarie Award\, South Africa’s equivalent to the Grammy Awards. \nHe began touring at the age of seven when he joined a traveling stage show\, and was later signed up to perform on a string of hit recordings\, turning him into a local teen idol. In 1975\, his cover of “Please Stay” by The Drifters reached number 2 in South Africa. The same year\, his cover of “I Love How You Love Me” by The Paris Sisters reached number 4. “I’ll Be Home” reached number 16 in 1976. \nSheléa‘s musical mastery makes her one of the most exhilarating up-and-coming artists today. While donning multiple hats of vocalist\, songwriter\, pianist\, arranger\, and producer\, Sheléa evokes the sultry energy of Whitney Houston and the piano chops and writing prowess of Alicia Keys. Sheléa’s debut album\, Love Fell On Me\, is a return to true artistry\, blending traditional pop\, jazz\, R&B\, and soul and marking an exciting revival of singing and songwriting in a music scene that is laced with auto-tune and beat-driven numbers that read more like chants than songs. \nWhen Stevie Wonder was asked to sing for the President and Michelle Obama at the White House in May 2012\, honoring composers Burt Bacharach and Hal David with the Gershwin Prize\, he felt it was a perfect opportunity to showcase Sheléa’s ingenuity. He suggested she be added to the program. With that\, Sheléa went on to bring down the house with her rendition of “Anyone Who Had a Heart” featuring Arturo Sandoval on trumpet. \nSheléa’s debut album\, Love Fell On Me\, evokes a simpler time of love through innovative storytelling and breathtaking melodies interjected with up-tempo driving grooves that display Sheléa’s edgy side. You can hear Sheléa’s classic influences throughout her music\, but she is not a throwback. On the contrary\, she is pushing the musical envelope forward and bringing us back to true artistry. Shélea’s first single/video\, “Seeing You\,” exposed the world to her classic romantic side. Sheléa’s second single released in February 2013\, “Love The Way You Love Me\,” evokes shades of Whitney Houston. “Love The Way You Love Me” continues to get massive airplay on both national and international radio stations. \nJohn Stoddart is an American R&B/Gospel singer-songwriter who grew up singing in church and began formal vocal training at age 13.  In 1993\, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Piano and Voice from Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park\, Maryland. Stoddart has worked as a songwriter on many other artists’ albums and also on production and backing vocal levels. Stoddart sang backing vocals for “I Surrender” on Celine Dion‘s 2002 album A New Day Has Come. \nKevin Whalum – One would imagine\, however\, that Kevin is best known for his stellar work with Kirk on his brother’s gospel series entitled\, Kirk Whalum\, The Gospel According To Jazz\, Chapters 1-4. Kevin now has three solo albums under his belt: the self-produced solo debut\, Timetable (2002); the George Duke-produced\, One Life To Love (2008); and the new self-produced\, I Live For You (2016). Although Kevin eschews any effort to force him into a category or genre\, he freely admits to defining himself as “primarily a jazz vocalist who just happens to be a Christian.” He exhorts\, “I hope I never agree to be just one thing. A true artist never wants that.” \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Directed by Travis Greisler\nMusic & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim\nBook by James Lapine\nJames Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless\, yet relevant\, piece… and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching. \nThe story follows a Baker and his wife\, who wish to have a child; Cinderella\, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack\, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse\, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted\, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. \nOne of Sondheim’s most popular works\, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy. SUMMARY:Boney James
DESCRIPTION:SAXOPHONIST AND COMPOSER BONEY JAMES’ HONESTLY REFLECTS MUSIC’S POWER TO TRANSPORT\nFour-time GRAMMY-Nominee Celebrates 25 Years with September 1\, 2017 Release\nFeaturing Vocalists Avery*Sunshine & Eric Roberson\n  \nIt’s been a full quarter-century since a young saxophonist and composer released his debut recording as a leader\, Trust. Now\, on September 1\, 2017\, Boney James will release his 16th album\, this one titled Honestly. If you sense a direct line between those titles\, you’ve already come a long way toward understanding what motivates the four-time GRAMMY nominee and multi-platinum-selling musician. \n“I’m fighting the good fight to be my own artist and not be pigeonholed\,” says the genre-blurring James. “With a record’s title I always try to find something that will communicate the feeling I get when I listen to it. The feeling I get with this music is a sense of sincerity and intimacy. The word ‘honestly’ really reflects how I aspire to live my life and create my music. One of the great things about music is how powerful it is. It can totally transport people. These are interesting times we are living in and the one thing I can do with the skills that I have is to make music that evokes a feeling and takes people somewhere… to do what I can to try and make the world a more pleasant place.” \nHonestly follows futuresoul\, James’ 2015 release which spent eleven weeks at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. The New York Times raved\, “Boney James performs with panache…His arc as a soloist is emotional…he can paint a scene.” \nHonestly\, says James\, is quite different sounding than the previous record. “It’s more exposed\,” he says of the 10-track collection. “Some of the arrangements are not as dense. A number of the songs have a more buoyant\, cheerful\, happy quality to them.” James produced the record and co-wrote all but one track\, his interpretation of the Johnny Mercer-Hoagy Carmichael classic ‘Skylark.’ James recruited collaborators and musicians whose work he admires\, including chart-topping vocalists/co-writers Avery*Sunshine (on the title track) and Eric Roberson (on ‘If I Can’t Hold You’). \nEach track on Honestly reflects a different side of James’ musical personality. “Songs like ‘Kicks’ or ‘Up All Night’ are much more boisterous sounding than the last couple of records\,” he says. “Then there’s ‘Skylark\,’ a song that I have always loved…a standard which I’ve never recorded before. The track Honestly (and first Urban Adult single) featuring Avery*Sunshine is straight up R&B.” Regarding Avery\, James says\, “I heard her at a festival\, we were both playing and then I heard her #1 single ‘Call My Name’ on the radio. I was instantly a fan and just waiting for the right song for us to collaborate.” \nFirst instrumental single ‘Tick Tock\,’ one of four songs co-written and co-produced with Jairus Mozee (Anthony Hamilton\, Robin Thicke) is one of several on the album featuring a horn arrangement by Jerry Hey\, who worked on Michael Jackson’s greatest hits\, amongst others. “It’s a very funky track with an insistent groove and the arrangement goes places you don’t expect it to go\,” says James. \nAlthough each track on the album has its own definitive feel\, James points directly toward some of his greatest influences as having provided inspiration. “I think about Stevie Wonder\, Steely Dan and Earth\, Wind & Fire\,” he says\, also mentioning such iconic R&B and contemporary jazz artists as the Brothers Johnson\, Tower of Power and Grover Washington Jr. as having impacted him. “These are the bands that I grew up loving and the thing that they had was this method of arranging so the music is a character itself. That’s something I aspire to create on my records. The bass line can be a hook\, or a horn line or keyboard riff that you sing in your head—that’s what I’m trying to create on the record. A tapestry of sounds that puts you in another world.” \nJames plays tenor and soprano saxophone parts on Honestly and contributes keyboards and drum programming to several of the tracks. But his career might have turned out a lot differently had a music store in his native New Rochelle\, New York\, had his first choice in stock the day he walked inside. “I wanted to play trumpet but when we went to the store to rent a trumpet all they had were clarinets\, so I went home with a clarinet. Two years later I guess I was the best clarinet player in a band full of clarinets and the teacher wanted a sax player so he leaned on me to pick up the saxophone. I didn’t want to do it because it was a much heavier case I’d have to carry. But as soon as I switched I loved it and it pretty quickly became my favorite thing to do. It still is!” \nBy the time he entered his teens\, James was gigging with bands\, and he turned pro at 19. He apprenticed as a sideman for artists like Morris Day and the Isley Brothers\, picking up pointers on how to present himself onstage and off\, and didn’t cut his first album under his own name until he was 30. The independently released Trust led immediately to a major label deal and a string of increasingly successful recordings and live dates. His skill as a performer as well as a recording artist garnered this notice from the Boston Globe\, “James swaggered across the stage like a blacktop hero draining treys on an overmatched opponent. He even weaved his way through the audience\, never missing a beat and all but daring the crowd not to have a good time.” Over the years\, James has racked up sales of more than three million records\, four RIAA gold albums\, four GRAMMY nominations\, a Soul Train Award\, nominations for two NAACP Image Awards and 10 CDs atop Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. In 2009\, Billboard named him one of the Top 3 Contemporary Jazz Artists Of The Decade along with Kenny G and Norah Jones. \nWith Honestly\, as with futuresoul and the GRAMMY-nominated The Beat before it\, Boney James is making some of the most stellar\, wholly realized music of his career. “I’ve just grown up\, personally and musically\,” he says. “I’m a lot calmer now when I approach making music and have more confidence. I’m a “give-110 percent” kind of person and I’m enjoying the process more now. I think that comes out in the music. Maybe that’s why this new record is so much fun to listen to. There are parts on the record that still make me smile.” \nJames lives in Los Angeles with his wife of 32 years\, Actress/Director Lily Mariye and has written scores for her film projects. \nThank you to our signature sponsor\n \nSponsored by:\nSpano Abstract – Breslin Realty – Farm Country Kitchen – Hampton Inn & Suites – Westbury Jeep – Rettner Realty – Tax Lien Advisors – Budd Morgan – Cancos Tiles – Mid Island Collision \nIn Association with Alan Stein
