The Tower of London during the reign of Henry VIII is the dramatic setting for this story of love, loss and rediscovery. The handsome young soldier Colonel Fairfax, unjustly sentenced to die, is spirited to freedom moments before the execution…. but moments after, he has been secretly married to the beautiful merrymaid Elsie Maynard. As the hunt closes in on Fairfax, Elsie must choose between him and her partner, the tormented jester Jack Point.
It’s Gilbert & Sullivan’s classic The Yeomen of the Guard, a deeply romantic story that has been popular throughout the English-speaking world since 1888.
Long a favorite of the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire, The Yeomen of the Guard features some of W.S. Gilbert’s most beautiful lyrics, paired with Arthur Sullivan’s sweeping, romantic music. Its songs include the yearning “I Have a Song to Sing, O,” the bouncy patter song “A Private Buffoon Is a Light-Hearted Loon,” the ravishingly beautiful quartet “Strange Adventure,” the lyrical “Is Life a Boon?” and the comical “Hereupon We’re Both Agreed.”” All in all, The Yeomen of the Guard is a funny, charming, profoundly moving show that was its creators’ favorite of their partnership.
